How do air gaps affect the performance of X-ray grids in radiography?

Air gaps, the distance between the patient and the detector, can significantly affect the performance of X ray grids in radiography. When an air gap exists, scatter radiation has a chance to disperse before reaching the detector. This reduces scatter radiation reaching the detector, leading to improved image contrast. However, at larger air gaps, the decrease in scatter radiation can also result in decreased image brightness.

The effectiveness of a grid in reducing scatter radiation also diminishes with increasing air gap. This occurs because the grid’s ability to absorb scatter radiation is lessened when the scattered photons have more space to disperse before reaching the grid. Therefore, optimal grid performance typically requires minimizing the air gap. However, in some situations, such as trauma imaging where close contact with the patient is not feasible, techniques like increasing grid ratio or optimizing exposure factors may be necessary to compensate for the increased air gap. We are a manufacturer of X-ray machines and their accessories.
