Operating Workflow of a Medical Dual-Column DR X-Ray System for Upright and Supine Radiography

The medical dual-column DR X-ray system (commonly referred to as a dual-column DR system) capable of both upright and supine imaging must be operated by certified radiologic technologists. The core workflow is: power-on self-test → verify patient information → patient positioning → parameter setting/linked focusing → exposure and imaging → image evaluation → shutdown and reset.

Standard Operating Procedure for the Medical Dual-Column DR X-Ray System:

Power-On and Self-Test: Turn on the main power supply and wait for the system to complete startup. Confirm that the high-voltage generator, flat-panel detector, and mechanical columns show no alarm codes. Perform necessary tube warm-up if the equipment has not been used for an extended period.

Information Verification and Protection: Verify the patient’s name, examination site, and request form. Remove metal objects (jewelry, zippers, etc.) from the examination area. Instruct the patient to wear lead protective devices (e.g., thyroid collar). Ensure non-essential personnel evacuate the lead-shielded room.

Patient Positioning and Focusing for the Medical Dual-Column DR X-Ray System:

Upright position (e.g., chest radiography): The patient stands close against the detector of the chest stand, with arms internally rotated or hands on hips to retract the scapulae, then takes a deep breath and holds it.

Supine position (e.g., extremities/abdomen): The patient lies flat on the examination table; adjust the body’s midline to coincide with the table’s centerline.

Linked focusing: Utilize the dual-column linkage function to move the tube and detector (or chest stand) to the target height, ensuring the collimator centerline coincides with the detector center. The radiation field should cover the imaging area without exceeding it.

Parameter Setting: Select a preset program (APR) or manually set the tube voltage (kV) and current-time product (mAs) according to the examination site, patient body habitus, and whether an anti-scatter grid is used. Modern equipment typically supports “one-click intelligent exposure.”

Exposure and Imaging: The operator retreats to the protected area or triggers exposure via foot switch. Instruct the patient to remain still and follow breathing instructions (e.g., “breathe in — hold”).

Image Evaluation and Processing: The workstation displays the image immediately. The operator evaluates positioning, density, contrast, and presence of artifacts. If the image is unacceptable, repeat the exposure; if acceptable, perform post-processing (window width/level adjustment) and transmit to the PACS system.

Shutdown and Reset: After the examination, return the tube and columns to the safe parking position, turn off the high voltage and main power, and log the equipment usage.

Key Precautions for Operating the Medical Dual-Column DR X-Ray System:

Personnel Qualification: Operation by non-professional personnel is strictly prohibited. Operators must have completed radiation safety and equipment operation training.

Radiation Safety: Strictly follow the principles of “time, distance, and shielding.” Ensure all personnel are outside the protected area during exposure. Periodically test the equipment for radiation leakage.

Equipment Maintenance: Clean the detector surface daily (prevent scratches and liquid penetration). Periodically calibrate the mechanical travel and light-field consistency.

Contraindication Screening: Pregnant or suspected pregnant patients require special risk assessment; additional abdominal shielding or alternative non-radiation examinations should be considered when necessary.
