High Frequency vs Low Frequency X-Ray Machines

High frequency and low frequency X-ray machines are built around the same basic principle – an X-ray tube produces radiation – but the generator that drives the tube is completely different. A high frequency machine runs its high-voltage generator above 20 kHz, while an analog (low frequency) machine operates below 400 Hz. This single difference changes exposure accuracy, patient dose, power supply requirements and even the physical size of the machine. This guide explains the difference and helps you decide which technology fits your room.

High frequency vs low frequency: what do the names mean

The “frequency” refers to the working frequency of the high-voltage generator inside the machine. In a high frequency X-ray machine, the high-voltage generator works at a frequency above 20 kHz. In an analog X-ray machine, the generator works at a frequency below 400 Hz. The higher frequency allows the transformer to be much smaller and the exposure to be controlled precisely, which is why modern X-ray machines are increasingly high frequency and traditional analog machines are gradually being replaced.

Side-by-side comparison

Item High frequency X-ray machine Low frequency (analog) X-ray machine
Generator working frequency Above 20 kHz Below 400 Hz
Exposure control Voltage preset plus feedback adjustment, high exposure accuracy Conventional control, more soft rays in the beam
Radiation dose Soft rays greatly reduced, lower patient dose Higher proportion of soft radiation
Image quality Better X-ray photography quality and higher output efficiency Lower consistency
Power supply demand Uses energy storage components; much lower supply requirement, can even be powered by DC Large analog machines often need a dedicated power supply
High-voltage transformer Volume greatly reduced, generator easy to miniaturize Large transformer
Material and cost Less copper and iron, lower production cost More copper and iron, higher material cost

Benefit 1: higher exposure accuracy and a lower patient dose

The high frequency generator adopts a voltage preset and feedback adjustment method, so the exposure control accuracy is high. It greatly reduces the soft rays in the X-ray beam, lowers the radiation dose received by the patient, improves the quality of the X-ray photograph, and raises the output efficiency of the machine at the same time. For clinics doing many repeat examinations such as chest or spine follow-ups, lower dose per image adds up over a year of work.

Benefit 2: much lower demands on the power supply

A high frequency machine uses energy storage components, which greatly reduces its requirement on the power supply. In some designs it can even be powered with direct current. Large analog X-ray machines, by contrast, often require a dedicated three-phase power supply with a low line resistance. This is why a high frequency machine is far easier to install in rooms with limited electrical capacity. If you are preparing the electrical work for a 500 mA class room, our X-ray machine power requirements guide lists the supply conditions to check.

Benefit 3: a smaller high-voltage transformer

Because the operating frequency is high, the volume of the high-voltage transformer can be greatly reduced. This makes miniaturization of the generator possible for large-power X-ray machines. A smaller generator means the overall system fits smaller rooms and leaves more space for the tube stand, the table and the control station.

Benefit 4: lower material and production cost

Because the transformer is small, the generator not only saves production cost but also uses less copper and iron. For a manufacturer that produces generators in volume, this material saving is passed to the buyer – high frequency machines are no longer more expensive than analog machines, while offering better performance.

Should you choose high frequency or analog?

For almost any new X-ray room, a high frequency machine is the rational choice: better exposure control, lower patient dose, easier power supply preparation and a smaller footprint. Analog machines may still be considered in very basic low-load projects, but the frequency of analog machines is also being phased out of the market. When you compare quotes, look at the generator frequency rather than the marketing name, and check the kV and mA range against your actual studies – the way you would when choosing an orthopedic X-ray machine for a clinic.

FAQ

Is a high frequency X-ray machine really better than a low frequency one?

For most buyers, yes. A high frequency machine gives more accurate exposure, reduces the soft rays that contribute to patient dose, demands less from the power supply and is smaller and cheaper to build. The differences come from the generator working frequency, above 20 kHz for high frequency units versus below 400 Hz for analog units.

Do high frequency machines produce less radiation for the patient?

They produce less unnecessary soft radiation. The voltage preset and feedback adjustment reduce the soft rays in the beam, which lowers the dose received by the patient while keeping the diagnostic image quality. The exact dose depends on the examination, so compare with your own workload and your radiology staff’s measurements.

Can an existing analog X-ray machine be upgraded to high frequency?

It depends on the machine design. Because the high-voltage generator is the heart of the system, many analog units need a full generator and control replacement rather than a simple part swap. Ask the manufacturer whether a high frequency generator retrofit is available for your specific model before planning the upgrade.

Why are portable and mobile X-ray machines almost all high frequency?

Because high frequency generators are small and have low power supply requirements, the whole machine becomes light and mobile – it can even work on a DC supply in some designs. That is the combination of features that portable and mobile imaging demands, which is why high frequency technology dominates that category.
