Cattle & Horse Veterinary X-ray Machine: Specifications & Installation Guide

Cattle and Horse Veterinary X-ray Machines are primarily used for the diagnosis of skeletal and joint disorders, lameness localization, pre-purchase examinations, and auxiliary assessment of deep thoracic and abdominal lesions in large animals (cattle and horses). Their core value lies in their ability to penetrate the thick body walls of cattle and horses, revealing deep structures that small-animal equipment cannot capture

For bovine and equine work, generator power and detector durability matter more than clinic-grade image polish. Match the kVp ceiling to your thickest anatomy, and plan installation around animal flow—not room aesthetics.

Generator. Equine distal limbs image well at 72–80 kV, but bovine abdominal and equine vertebral studies demand 100–135 kV for adequate penetration. Choose a high-frequency veterinary X-ray machine with at least 100 kVp capability and dual focal spots: 0.6 mm for detail work, 1.2 mm for thick-body exposures.

Detector. A 14 × 17 inch wireless flat panel covers most equine podiatry and bovine limb views without repositioning. CsI scintillator with ~139–154 μm pixel pitch delivers the contrast resolution needed for fissures and soft-tissue swelling. For barn use, IP54 sealing is practical, not optional—dust and splashes are routine.

Installation: two paths. Fixed room setups require 380V three-phase power and shielding built to veterinary standards. Plan the gantry footprint around cattle crush or stocks access, not around wall space. Portable configurations—battery generator plus wireless detector—suffice for distal limb work and ambulatory pre-purchase exams, but accept lower output.

Safety, briefly. Collimate tight. Lead aprons (0.25 mm minimum) for anyone restraining the animal. If a handler holds the plate, they stay at arm’s length and out of the primary beam.

Practical note: Specify the generator for the thickest anatomy you routinely image. A 70 kV unit that struggles through a cow’s flank wastes everyone’s time.
